Stockholms Auktionsverk Presents

The Vega Collection

A unique live auction presenting Louis Palander af Vega’s private collection from the Vega Expedition of 1878 to 1880, the first voyage in history to navigate the Northeast Passage. This is one of the most significant polar collections ever offered at auction in Sweden.

After more than a century in the care of the family, a unique body of material is now being presented for the first time: diaries, letters, logbooks, photographs, and charts, all directly connected to 19th-century Sweden’s most important polar expedition.

The collection provides a fascinating insight into Louis Palander’s role as captain of the Vega and his subsequent career. This view is further broadened by a large number of objects linked to the expedition, Palander’s photographic documentation of the journey, as well as his extensive correspondence with, among others, A. E. Nordenskiöld, Fridtjof Nansen, S. A. Andrée, Sven Hedin, Alfred Nobel, and King Oscar II.
