A warm welcome to Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsinki and the Modern Art & Design Sale!The catalogue has finally arrived, featuring nearly 300 lots of form and colour — with a few explosive highlights to set it all alight.

At the very heart of the auction stands Reidar Särestöniemi’s Frost Birches. Across a surface of 130 x 130 cm, Särestöniemi — both free-spirited and technically virtuosic — covers the canvas with the Lapland winter, rendered so vividly one can almost feel the chill. He also contributes the comparatively expressive Evening Frost and the Crescent Moon, where a pale moon rises over a candy-pink sky. It is an intense experience, standing in striking contrast to Ernst Mether-Borgström’s December, whose geometric formations in green, beige, black, and blue offer a markedly more restrained expression.These works are presented alongside Kari Juva’s over one-metre-tall Rider on Horseback and Tapio Wirkkala’s Snipe — both powerful bronze sculptures.

The furniture section of the sale features several pieces of the highest quality. Among them is Tapio Wirkkala’s coffee table — its tabletop a work of art in itself. Particularly inviting are Flemming Lassen’s sheepskin-clad armchairs, produced by Asko in the early 1950s, or perhaps Märta Blomstedt’s wonderfully embracing wing chair Aulanko. All three harmonize beautifully with Paavo Tynell’s ten-armed brass beauty — a most rare model amid a truly generous selection of lamps by the great master of lighting design.

As tradition dictates, the auction also includes several extravagant works in glass. Among these, Oiva Toikka contributes a cast obelisk standing 106 cm high and the colourful vase Pompom.In ceramics, there is a truly exceptional relief by Rut Bryk, created in the late 1950s, along with several decorative plates by Birger Kaipiainen.

Beyond these, the sale also features art and design by Taisto Kaasinen, Birger Carlstedt, Gunnel Nyman, and many, many more.
