Icon painting is a distinctive art form.The very word stems from the Greek eikon, meaning image, but icons have often been described as “windows to heaven.” Now, Stockholms Auktionsverk Göteborg throws these windows wide open and invites us to experience sacred images of Orthodox character.

In total, 51 lots are presented, spanning four centuries and executed in a variety of techniques. Alongside truly magnificent wall-mounted examples, we also find travel icons and pendant icons. Together, the selection offers a broad spectrum of this fascinating art form, which – unsurprisingly – has long been an established collectors’ category in its own right.
