Baroque Master Jusepe de Ribera’s Newly Discovered Painting The Flagellation of Christ Sparks Fierce Bidding at Stockholm’s Auktionsverk
The newly discovered painting The Flagellation of Christ by Baroque master Jusepe de Ribera sparked intense bidding during The Exclusive Collection auction at Stockholm’s Auktionsverk on Thursday afternoon. The sensational work drew international interest and was sold for a record-breaking 5 million SEK, setting a new Scandinavian auction record for a Ribera painting.
In The Exclusive Collection, Stockholm’s Auktionsverk allowed its specialists to handpick the highest quality works of the spring season. One of the auction’s top highlights was the newly discovered Old Master painting The Flagellation of Christ by the renowned Baroque artist Jusepe de Ribera.
Previously part of the Gösta Stenman collection, the much-discussed painting had long been mistakenly attributed to another artist. However, thanks to in-depth research and a thorough attribution by Professor Nicola Spinosa and French Old Master specialist Stéphane Pinta of Cabinet Turquin, the true creator of the work was confirmed.
The international interest in this masterpiece led to a bidding war before the painting was ultimately sold for 5 million SEK – a new record for a Ribera work in Scandinavia.
“It is fantastic to see such an exclusive and art-historically significant work receive the recognition it deserves and spark international competition at a Swedish auction. I’m pleased to see this early work by Jusepe de Ribera take its rightful place in art history,” says Victoria Svederberg, Head of the Art Department at Stockholm’s Auktionsverk.
