Folio (270x200 mm). (84), 1-815 (lacks last blank leaf) pp. 1 full page wood-engraved map of Scandinavia, 2 full-page wood-engraved printer's devices. About 460 woodcuts in the text, of which 10 larger, some repeated.
Late 17th century brown calf binding, somewhat worn, some discolouring of upper board, some small cracks or holes in the joints, gilt edges of covers, richly gilt spine in six compartments, small damage at head, red edges.
Minor foxing on a few leaves. Old engraved bookplate on inside of lover cover.
First edition. Collijn II: 221-227. During the 16th century about 14 different editions in Latin, French, Italian, Dutch, and German were published. This book is still one of the most important sources of Northern customs and daily life of the time. Olaus Magnus (1490-1557) was the last Catholic Archbishop of Sweden, which he left in 1524.
