WITH LARGE WOODCUT MAP OF SCANDINAVIA. OLAUS MAGNUS. Historia de gentium septentrionalium variis conditionibus statibusque, & de morum, rituum, superstitionum, exercitiorum, regiminis, disciplinae, uictusq, mirabili diversitate.... Basileae (Basel, ex officina Henricpetrina) 1567.

Folio (324x205 mm.). (96), 854, (2) pp. Title and last leaf with printer´s device in woodcut. Large folding woodcut map (390x515 mm. including margins, 1 small hole in upper folding, left side with some damages and minor loss [of scale], partly creased), illustrated with about 485 woodcuts in the text.
Contemporary binding in full vellum, boards with blindtooled frame, spine in compartments and with manuscript title (partly worn and darkened), some staining, lower corners partly damaged, lacking ties, upper board slightly warped, spine with damages to the top, partly with split joints, split inner hinges. Both first endpapers later. On inside of cover a paper is mounted (probably 19th century), with long handwritten notes. Lower corner throughout with some damages and minor loss, margins sometimes frayed (probably due to damp, but no loss of text), some foxing, title with some paper loss to corner, some minor spotting to margin and small handwritten number in the upper margin, dampstains to upper margin to the beginning and the last few leaves including last leaf with printer´s device, some minor spotting and foxing, a few leaves with some burstings in the paper. Bookplates of Samuel Parr and George Alan Lowndes, Barrrington Hall on a later (19th c.) flyleaf, last bookplate with repair.

Collijn II:363-366. VD16 M225. Nordenskiold Collection 575. Ginsburg 23.
Edition 9, first edition printed in Basel in Latin, reprint (literally) of the first Rome edition of 1555, but with some amendments. According to Collijn, the latin edition of Petri has supposedly been printed without the woodcut map, but the map has later been inserted in some copies.
The large folding map with the monogram initials THW at the lower right corner = Thomas Weber, the woodcutter. This map is a simplfied version of Magnus´s Carta Marina of 1539, which is known in two copies only. Formerly attributed to Johann Baptist Fickler but subsequently identified as the work of Thomas Weber, it shows northern Europe from Scotland to northwest Russia. Weber´s monogram and date appear at bottom right. (See: F. Grenacher, "The Basel Proofs of Seven Printed Ptolemaic Maps", in: Imago Mundi XIII (1956), p. 171.).
