Hand-coloured oval-shaped engraved world map (old colour) with two cartouches, sea-beasts and one sailing ship, title heightend with gold. Latin text on verso. Plate area about 355x490 mm. Laid down on japan paper. Centrefold slightly browned to lower part, some slight soiling to margins, small note in pencil to lower left margin. Narrow margins. Framed.

Ortelius' famous world map from what is considered to be the first modern atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", published in 1570. This map is engraved by Franz Hogenberg and based on Mercator's wall map of 1569, Gastaldi's map from 1561 and Diego Gutierrez' portolan map of the Atlantic.
