8:o. (3), iv, (1)-216 pp. Frontispiece portrait, illustrations.
Contemporary brown full calf, somewhat worn, gilt inner borders, gilt edges of covers, spine in six compartments, all edges gilt. Withbound a two-page letter (on one leaf with printed head "Down, Beckenham, Kent. Railway Station Orpington. S. E. R."), written and signed by Charles Darwin, in pencil, dated Jan. 13 1881, to Leslie Stephen. Also withbound a leaf signed by Leslie Stephen, with a mounted dedication "From Charles Darwin with Kindest regards Jan 13 1881" and an 8-line written comment by Stephen regarding the letter .

The Stephens commentary says that the Darwin letter refers to an attack upon Darwin by Butler, which he advice Darwin to ignore. The Darwin letter starts "My dear Leslie Stephen. Your note is one of the kindest which I have ever Received...". . The book has been in the ownership of a northern Swedish family for many decades and according to the owner's catalogue-text, the item was bought at Sotheby's 19-20. February 1968, lot no. 279 (the property of Mr L.[eonard] Woolf).
