8vo (245x145 mm.). 606 hand-coloured engraved plates, some folding (of 611, lacking 5 plates, last 5 plates to vol. I with dampstains, vol. III with some dampstains to lower margin, small tear to one plate, some offsetting, some foxing, some damages to upper margin to some pages, text some foxing and soiling, vol. I with dampstains and some worming to the end, about 30 pages). Without the engraved portrait of James Sowerby and the 1835 ´Systematical Index to the Six Volumes´.
Untrimmed in very worn and damaged contemporary half calf bindings, 1 front board loose, spines lacking or loose with damages, joints split. Antiquarian cut on inside of upper cover to vol. I. 6 volumes.

Rare work on fossils from all parts of the British Isles. An incomplete volume VII, issued in eight parts was later published between 1840-1846, and is, as here, often wanting.
James Sowerby (1757-1822), English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist. James de Carle Sowerby (1787-1871), son of J. S., also a mineralogist, botanist and illustrator.

Provenance: The consigners´ family is related to James Sowerby (1757-1822) through their great grandmother, who was the daughter Charlotte Ann Sowerby (Lottie), later married Bryant. The family´s grandmother later bought this work in London in the 1920´s.
