PAGE, THÉOGÈNE FRANÇOIS (1807-1867). Captain of the frigate La Favorite. "Chine. Rapport de Mr. Page Capitaine de Corvette, Commandant la Favorite. Avril 1844" (manuscript title on upper wrapper).
Manuscript, c. 340x230 mm, 117 numbered pages, written in a neat (?) secreterial hand, stitched in original plain paper wrappers, inscribed in ink on upper wrapper as title in a calligraphic hand, written on board the frigate La Favorite, April 1844.

According to a scrap of paper loosely inserted in this volume, the present manuscript "Pourrait aller aux archives de la Marine", suggesting perhaps this report, devoted to the Chinese section of Page´s voyage, did not reach Admiral Deperre, unlike Page´s report on the Persian Gulf, which Deperre had received and greatly valued. (See item xxxx).
Captain Page´s detailed report, based on his first-hand experience of the Chinese empire, concentrates on the history, present state and future development and potential of China, with numerous references to British and Dutch colonial ambitions in the region.
