8vo (193x120 mm). (22), (4), 66, (2), (4), 92, (2 blanks), (4), 84, (4), (4), 118, (24 with last page blank), (2), 112, (2) pp. Dedication from Linnaeus to the nephew of Artedi, Olof Ljungberg. Title with the signature of a former owner Hans Tunaeus, dated 1753 (some spotting).
Contemporary full calf, worn, partly warped covers, spine in compartments, partly split joints, speckled edges.
Old notes on inside of both covers and first free endpaper which is partly loose.
Last part title loose, title with partly cut signature and monogram. Some minor foxing and staining, some contemporary notes in text and margin, a few underlinings. With the bookplate of Birger Strandell.

Edited by Linné (Linnaeus) and published three years afterArtedi´s unfortunate death (he drowned after falling into one of the canals of Amsterdam) while working with the zoologist and pharmacist Albert Seba.
First edition of this important work which introduced a new system of the description of fish which was also adopted by Linnaeus in his "Systema". Artedi may be regarded as the father of modern ichthyology.

With loose invoices from Rosenkilde and Bagger, Copenhagen and a copy of a letter from Hans Sallander in Uppsala, dated 1969, regarding the genuinity of the signature of Linnaeus and the relationship between Artedi and Ljungberg, and some information on Hans Tunaeus. According to Sallander Olof Ljunberg (died 1743) was the son of Artedi´s sister Elisabeth who was married to Jonas Ljungberg in Umeå.
Hans Tunaeus (1704-78), Swedish vicar in Grundsunda in the north of Sweden.

Provenance: Birger Strandell (1901-1993), famous Swedish collector of Linnaeus. Strandell was a Stockholm physician and descendant of Linnaeus who built a private collection of Linnaean materials. A large part of his collections are in The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh USA.
