Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 - 1689), 17th-century French gem merchant and traveler. Tavernier, a private individual and merchant traveling at his own expense, covered, by his own account, 60,000 leagues (120,000 miles) in making six voyages to Persia and India between the years 1630 and 1668, gathering a wealth of information on the commerce of the region and trade routesthrough it. In 1675, Tavernier, at the behest of his patron Louis XIV, published Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier. (Wikipedia).

The second work published by Edmund Everard in 1680 as a supplement to Six Voyages..., first published in French 1679. It contains among others a description of Tonkin, the northernmost region of Vietnam, and a substantial relation of Japan.
