CHARLES VII (1403-1461), king of France.

Document on vellum, the King's approval to a request by Johan and Robin Baranton, prisoners to the English, to permit their relatives to sell without tax some wine casks, to receive money for ransom. 1 page 197x302 mm. Dated Bouce (Bourges) April 15th, probably 1424-25 (Le XV:me jour d'avril l'an de grace MC (?)... le (deuxieme) de mon Reyne). Not signed but with the text "De par le Roy en son conseil" and under that an "R", and countersigned "Fresnoy". Tear after missing seal, browning, larger stain, some spotting. Later annotation on verso.

Charles VII ruled as King of France 1422-1461, during a time of war with England and a civil war between the Armagnacs (supporters of the House of Valois) and the Burgundian party. His court was situated in Bourges at the time of this document. The Kings military position was strengthened with the help and inspiration of Joan of Arc, which lead to several important military victories and the King was crowned at Reims cathedral in 1429.
